About the parish

St Mary’s is a progressive Anglican parish located close to the city in South Perth. We are a church that welcomes all people, and our parish community includes people of all ages, and from a wide variety of backgrounds. We are proud to be welcoming of LGBTI people. We believe that our faith calls us to ask questions, engaging with the mystery of God. We believe that God’s love is for all people, and that we are called to respond to that love by loving each other, without limit. As a parish, we try to be supportive of each other in this journey of discipleship. Sometimes we succeed, and sometimes we fall short, but as a community, we want to keep trying.

We believe that good music has the power to draw us into the presence of God in a unique way. Consequently, music holds an important place in our life at St Mary’s. Our worship on Sundays features professional musicians, producing high quality music that enhances our worship and enables a closer engagement with the divine.

The church building

The church of St Mary the Virgin is a heritage building and one of Perth's finest examples of architecture in the art deco idiom. The 1930s Gothic Moderne style in which the church is built is relatively uncommon in Australia. The church is built almost entirely of reinforced concrete and is listed on the Western Australian Register of Heritage Places and on the South Perth (Central) Municipal Heritage Inventory. The church site is near the crest of the ridge of high land in South Perth and has a panoramic outlook to the west over the Swan River estuary. The monument on the church grounds was built in 1970, also of reinforced concrete, comprising a segmented tripod structure supporting a statue representing Christ.

Stained glass

The elongated Gothic style windows are topped with stylised trefoils, and those on the north side feature stained glass panels, which have been installed throughout the life of the church, from the 1930s to the present. The windows depict a variety of stories, such as the descent of the Holy Spirit and the encounter between John the Baptist and Jesus in the river Jordan. More detail about the windows and what they represent can be found in the attached PDF.

Children

Children are an important and respected part of our parish. We offer many different events and activities for children and youth of all ages.

Community

We are a diverse parish that reaches out into the community around us, supporting organisations such as Anglicare, St Bartholomew’s House, and Amana Living.

Music

The St Mary’s Music Foundation is a charitable trust that enhances the cultural and artistic life in South Perth for the benefit of the congregation and the wider community.

Service times

Sung Eucharist

Sunday 9:00am

A celebration of the Eucharist, centred around beautiful music, modern, relevant and compassionate teaching, and a sense of community. Communicant members of other Christian churches are welcome to share Holy Communion with us. Morning tea is served after the service. There is Sunday School for young children (3–6 years of age), which includes a story and activity time. Activities are provided for older children, and toy bags are available for toddlers.

Saturday Celebration

Alternate Saturdays at 5:30pm

If you are looking for something different, here is a celebration of Holy Communion catering especially for families, with improvised music, family-friendly readings, and 'Kidz Time' with fun activities for children to learn from. Children up to 7 years of age have a story and activity time during part of the service, while older children are encouraged to participate in worship, to read and lead prayers, and to participate in ceremonial aspects of the service. There is a bring-and-share tea afterwards for all who would like to stay.

Seniors' Eucharist
